Contemporary Painterly Red Tuareg Moroccan Rug
About the Item
A unique flat-weave with a very robust texture obtained by brocading a warp-faced fabric composed of very thick woolen light orange wefts. It is inspired by the reed carpets of the Tuareg people of Mauritania. The fact that the Sumak brocading is done vertically instead of horizontally allows for the color background to have a vertical motion. Here we see the madder red background in various gradations giving the visual impression of vertical brushstrokes, with dots of light orange from the wefts seeping through the Sumak brocading.
This innovative arrangement brings this tribal textile within the domain of contemporary art, bridging that small gap between primitivism and modernity.
