About the Item
With the spirit of a paper collage, this vintage Boujad features rudimentary forms assembled in a simple and whimsical composition. A large central medallion is layered over a series of segmented vertical bands containing abstracted H-forms, branch motifs, and lozenges. An artistic palette of abrashed poppy red (wool) with motifs knotted in saturated hues of cobalt blue (industrial yarn), yellow, pink, and purple (wool), and a colorful cotton warp further emphasize the weaver’s energetic approach.
Boujad, an urban center with both Arab and Arabized Berber tribes in the Haouz plains region east of Marrakech (between the Middle Atlas and Atlantic Ocean) named after the town of the same name. Carpets from this region have similarities to those from the Middle Atlas, utilizing Berber motifs and similar structures, but tend to take on a more individualistic creative approach. Motifs are often distorted, and vast colors reflect an urban influence. These carpets can vary from an abstract side of weaving art to more precise symmetrical messages. Boujad carpets were not made for bedding but rather for use on the floor.
