About the Item
Vintage Tribal hand knotted natural wool Moroccan area rug
Size: 4'8" × 11'3" (142 × 343 cm).
This circa 1940 vintage Moroccan runner rug features an interesting all-over design of geometric abstractions that suggest to the eye stylized shapes of people and lighthouses while remaining utterly abstract. The design appears in dark brown against a field of neutral beige. Moroccan style area rugs have typically been woven by tribal peoples for their utility rather than for decoration. These vintage carpets experienced a growth in popularity in the West when Mid-Century Modern designers such as Le Corbusier paired the thick piled Berber antique rugs with their Minimalist furniture. Many of these Berber carpets are woven by the Beni Ourain peoples from the Rif Mountains near the city of Taza in northern Morocco. Colors vary from neutral shades to bright, Stand-out hues, with designs ranging from geometric simplicity to free-flowing abstraction. The primitivism feel of many Moroccan carpets makes them attractive to modernist collectors.

- Vintage Moroccan Tribal Orange Wool Floor RugLocated in Detroit, MIThis beautiful vintage handwoven Moroccan Berber rug is circa mid-20th century. It features a symmetrical banded geometric design infused with tribal symbolism in gorgeous shades of orange, red, pink, green, gray, brown and cream with gray fringe to both ends and tufts of decorative side fringe. The timeless design of this unique rug will complement any style of contemporary decor, from mid century modern and southwest to boho and global. Moroccan Berber rugs are handwoven by women artisans from the Berber tribes of the Atlas mountains of Morocco. Berber tribal rugs are one-of-a-kind pieces, woven from naturally dyed and undyed sheep’s wool. Lacking a written language, ancient Berber weavers would incorporate ancestral myths into their textiles using abstract images and symbols. This magic symbolism and a minimalist design give these Berber carpets their unique and timeless appeal.
