Vintage Ourika Miniature Berber Moroccan Rug with Abstract Squares
About the Item
Located south of Marrakesh, along the northern slopes of the High Atlas Mountains, the Ourika valley is known primarily for its covers in undyed ivory and brown wool depicting a moon-like imagery (Blazek 2005).
Here we see a pattern of abstracted, polychrome squares, arranged in an effortless, free rhythm which is clearly intentional and not the result of poor weaving skills. Quite the contrary, the weaver demonstrates her prowess by embellishing the warps with very fine red wefts, subtly hinting at a substrate, fine kilim pattern onto which the chunky coloured wool knots are woven.
