About the Item
Charming Rare and Collectible Antique Caucasian Baku Khila Rug, Country of Origin: Caucasus, Circa Date: 1800’s – This gorgeous antique rug is an exceptional antique find and a prime example of Caucasian Baku rugs. The rare and magnificent antique Baku rugs stand out as a carpet group because of their beautiful colors, tribal character, and motifs that often feature a stepped octagon surrounded by rectangular features. These are often accompanied by the traditional boteh motif, which is known as the eternal flame and is a symbol of eternal life. This one was created in the 1800s and is in exceptional condition for its age.
Baku is an ancient city in Armenia with a history that goes back to at least the 5th century A.D. Its location made it a prime target for conquest and a destination for travelers throughout the ages. As early as the 1600s, the presence of oil fields made it a lucrative area.
Tribal rugs from Baku are the combination of many cultural influences throughout Baku’s long history. Rugs from this area use a knotting technique that is Turkish and produces exceptionally durable area rugs. The designs will often show Mongolian, Persian, and other cultural influences. This combination creates a unique design and characteristics that set them apart from other Caucasian rugs.
The prosperity of Baku resulted in the building of a port and the Trans-Caucasian Railway. Not only did the local oil industry prosper from these advances, but it also gave village carpet weavers access to a global market that fell in love with their beautiful designs. This rare rug has a regal and elegant feel. In a larger architectural space, it could easily be hung on the wall as a tapestry rug to be admired as a valued antique. In a contemporary design, it will add its tribal character and beautiful colors to make a statement. It is an excellent piece for the collector or the contemporary designer to add an aged and timeless feel to the room
