The Cabuya rug, available in two different sizes, is a design by Sebastian Herkner, who translated the contrasting landscapes of the Colombian Santander region into a textured textile design. The deep canyons, dry deserts, and lush green mountains have inspired Cabuya’s earthy, grounded colors that direct the attention to the various structures in the rug.
Each rug is produced by hand in our partner workshops in Santander, a Colombian region with a long tradition of working with the fibers that are made from the leaves of the Fique plant. These fibers are dyed with mostly natural ingredients, such as nuts, roots, and bark from trees. To create the rug, the skilled artesanos use three different manufacturing techniques: two of the three pieces of the rug are tied and knotted by hand in a vertical loom – the combination of double knotting and unique knitting creates a special structure. The third element of Cabuya is needlework executed with two large knitting needles. Alone the preparation of the fibers – which includes harvesting, drying, brushing, and spinning – takes up to seven days, while the artesanos and artesanas work 20 days on producing the final rug.
German designer Sebastian Herkner is a long-term collaborator of Ames and has visited Colombia multiple times to experience the country’s cities, nature and people first hand. He also visited many of the ateliers that Ames has partnered with to learn about the unique traditional crafts of Colombia's regions. A sought-after contemporary designer and recipient of many industry awards, he has worked with many international design brands, creating intriguing pieces that showcase his intuition for interesting material, color, and texture combinations.

Galerie Philia
Galerie Philia is an international contemporary sculptural design and art gallery representing emerging and established designers and artists. The gallery is the brainchild of two brothers who share a lifetime passion for art, literature and philosophy. Their distinct academic background sets them apart from their peers, as it sees them following a rhizomatic and transcultural approach in the way they select works. This involves combining elements from multiple cultures in what becomes a network of harmoniously interconnected roots, ultimately revealing the beauty of each unique creation. The gallery’s non-hierarchical curation sits apart from the ephemerality of trends and focuses instead on the true aesthetic quality of the piece – alluring and timeless. Unlike others, Galerie Philia does not focus on a single style – whether minimalist, organic or raw – but rather embraces heterogeneity. The Galerie Philia takes pride in discovering new talents, providing them with multiple international platforms to showcase their latest creations. As well as propelling the newest generation of 21st century collectible design, Galerie Philia also works with internationally known design artists. Galerie Philia has a strong international presence, with galleries in Geneva, New York and Singapore. In addition to their permanent spaces, the gallery organizes temporary group exhibitions and artists residencies in first-class locations around the world.

- Small Zenues Rug by Sebastian HerknerLocated in Geneve, CHSmall zenues rug by Sebastian Herkner Materials: 100 % natural virgin wool. Technique: Hand-woven in Colombia. Dimensions: W 160 x L 220 cm Available in size large. The striking zenues rug, a design by Sebastian Herkner, is inspired by old Colombian civilizations. When visiting the jewelry museum in Bogota, the designer discovered the gold works by the Zenu culture, which are decorated with so-called Narigeura symbols. These peoples lived in the Caribbean plains, through which the three large rivers Magdalena, Cauca, and San Jorge flow. Routinely they’d flood the fields so the Zenúes built a vast system of channels covering more than 500,000 hectares, controlling the flow of the water so that people and harvest would be protected. These landscapes inspired first the goldsmiths of the Zenúes – and now Sebastian Herkner. “These graphic objects have intrigued me for quite a while. Their symbolism is so narrative and expressive”, says the designer. The result: a subtle, yet striking, wool rug with various pile depths in a gentle crème white. Each rug is woven with natural virgin wool on traditional looms in ateliers in the Colombian Andes. The ‘channels’ of the monochrome rugs...Category
