Yei Navajo Rug, Early 20th Century

About the Item

Yei Navajo Rug, Early 20th Century In Navajo mythology, the Yei are a group of deities who act as mediators between humans and the Great Spirit. The Yei are also known as the Diyin Diné'e or Holy People, and are associated with the forces of nature. The Yei are said to preside over forces like the weather and the cycle between day and night and can be forces for good or evil. The Yei symbol is a pictorial representation of square-headed female dancers facing outward holding feathers. In Navajo mythology, the Yei spirits mediated between the Great Spirit and humans. The first Navajo rug depicting holy people appeared during the 1890s. Additional Information: Dimensions: 2'5" W x 4'10" L
