Antique Kurdish Souj Boulak Runner

About the Item

The Kurds are a relatively autonomous group whose population is concentrated primarily in Turkey, Iraq, and Persia (Iran). They are recognized as being prolific weavers who have produced rugs in a variety of patterns and weaves. Their lifestyles vary, being either nomadic, semi-nomadic (populating small villages), or sedentary by living in urban areas. The capital of Persian Kurdistan is Sanandaj, also referred to as Senna. In and around that city the rugs produced have fine-weaves, refined patterns, and close-cropped piles, whereas the rugs produced in villages tend to have coarser weaves, flexible handles, and vibrant stylized floral patterns. Rugs from the Souj Boulak area are distinguished by their red foundation weft threads. This runner has a repeat pattern of octagonal medallions flanked by birds, animals, and figures on an indigo field within an auburn rosette border. 15’ 5” x 3’ 4”.
