Antique Oversize Persian Sultanabad Rug 14'6 x 25'

About the Item

Antique Persian Sultanabad rug 14'6 x 25'. In Arak (now Markazi) province in west-central Persia, the town of Sultanabad (and surrounding villages) is justly famous for the light colored, boldly allover patterned large carpets woven in the 1880-1910 period. The British firm of Ziegler was the most important company, adapting the lighter, often unusual, colors and large-scale designs common to antique Turkish Oushaks to more Persianate drawing styles. The resulting rugs are light, airy, expansive, and unmistakable. Nothing looks like or can substitute for a Sultanabad. And nothing looks as opulent with high taste furnishings.

This unusually warm almost tomato ground is closely filled by a multi layered array of waving leaves multi form palmettes vines and amusing vegetal devices. Although the pattern flows under the border it is most vigorous toward the central axis. The elements are large when viewed in person and extremely colorful. There is no standard rug design name for this riotously dynamic patter. The abrashed medium blue border alternates conjoint ivory stars with complex rosettes. The red-light blue interplay contrasts warm with cool active with fixed in a most attractive manner. The Ziegler Company of Manchester England...

  • Antique Oversize Persian Terracotta Sultanabad Rug, circa 1880 17'6 x 23'9
    Located in New York, NY
Antique oversize Persian terracotta Sultanabad rug, circa 1880. Size 17'6 x 23'9. This is a village carpet? Well, a rather large one, not your usual scatter 4 x 6 or room size 9 x 12. Sultanabad carpets were woven in the Arak/Markazi province, around the town of Sultanabad, from the mid-1880’s until WWI, under the aegis and contracts of Western carpet firms, primarily Ziegler and Hotz. Neither firm marked their carpets, but it has been the modern trade practice to attribute quality Sultanabad's to Ziegler. Ziegler had a centralized dye works, design studio, wool processing operation and washing facility, but no workshops, the actual weaving being farmed out to local household ateliers. The patterns were distributed via sampler mats (wagirehs), the knot density and color palettes were assigned, and sufficient wool and foundational cotton were also given out. This splendid carpet must have been woven from a set of extremely well-drawn samplers. The desirable rust-red madder field shows a classically derived allover pattern of knotted cloud bands, large and complex ragged palmettes, smaller palmettes, slender vinery, leaves and diminutive florets. The accent tones include cream, pale green, straw, and light brown. The taupe main border shows a repeating pattern of double barbed leaves, octogramme rosettes, trefoil palmettes, tilted petal palmettes and supporting vinery. A rust-red plain border frames the whole. The use of plain, field tone borders on larger Persian carpets...

  • Antique Persian Sultanabad Rug, circa 1890 10'5 x 14'2
    Located in New York, NY
Antique Persian Sultanabad rug, circa 1890, measures: 10'5 x 14'2. The vast majority of Sultanabad carpets feature allover patterns on madder red grounds more or less of floral origin, and spaciously drawn with time-mellowed tones. Sultanabad's are the ultimate living room carpets, but are equally versatile in almost any room. Their mellow palettes make them welcoming and ultra-comfortable. Here a five-column pattern of round and laterally extended rosettes shows a distant connection to the popular Mina Khani rosette trellis pattern. The linked motives are detailed in light blue, cream, and salmon-buff on the warm madder red ground. The handsome pattern is not quite balanced, slightly sliding under the borders, and this gives it a mobility which, when in lesser hands, could have been all too rigid. This sort of subtle mobility cannot easily be duplicated in a factory carpet created from a rigorously preplanned design. Sultanabad The luminous cerulean indigo blue border is in the strip style, with the end borders running straight across, and the independent side strips filling in. Various rosettes and leaves create the pattern. As is characteristic of Sultanabad's, the plain outermost border repeats the field tone. This synchronicity is lost on the Mahals of the next generation. The weave is moderately coarse with a cotton foundation. The pile wool is softly resilient, and the knots are not strongly packed down. Sultanabad's are always in style and although many were woven, finding one in good condition is always a challenge. Sultanabad's usually run from 10 or 12 by 14 or 15, to 18 by 24...
