Seraband – West Central Persia
Sparkling wool and vivid colours dyed with natural dyes give this 120-year-old Persian gallery Seraband a vibrant effect. The gallery is composed of red fields with repeated designs of boteh (“seed of life”) and small figures arranged within the central field, forming a linear pattern. With many borders, the main ones were woven ivory and presented the traditional design of flowers interspersed between sinuous vines. The abrash provides a more significant visual effect – varying colour shades – adding more movement and liveliness to this extraordinary antique Persian rug. The carpet is clean and ready for use.
Seraband is a district located in west-central Persia. Serabend rugs have geometric designs and, most importantly, a pattern that covers the entire field of the carpet. The Seraband field design, known as Mir, has miniature botéh motifs repeated horizontally across the central background. Occasionally, designs with four triangles are woven into the corners of the background. The corners and edges also feature botéhs, leaves and vines woven into vertical stripes. The main edges are narrow and are accompanied by several bands that protect the inner and outer edges.
The simple design and colours employed in Seraband rugs made them attractive for use with European and American furniture. Older Serabands usually have a red or ivory background with ivory edges. In addition to these colours, different shades of green, red, blue, gold and brown appear in the design of other elements and their contours.
