Antique Persian Serapi circa 1900

About the Item

This carpet was hand woven in area know as Serapi/Heriz located in north west Iran. The rug has a huge cruciform medallion surrounded by simple angular vines and spandrels within a crab border. The salmon/rust field has a wonderful patina that age has created in the carpet. Serapi rugs have double-cotton weft and single cotton warp using Turkish knots. The dyes used in this carpet are organic of high quality that produced long-lasting colors that have mellowed beautifully with age. There are expert restorations done by master weavers in this rug, otherwise in very good condition for its age. Measures: 10 x 13.

    Antique Large Persian Serapi Carpet Rug, c. 1900 Serapi rugs and carpets were woven in the Heriz district of Northwest Persia starting in the Mid-19th century in response to a great increase in demand for rugs internationally. Prior to that, there were no rugs woven (in Persia) for export that exhibited this stylized drawing of plant and flower forms. The lower knot density and thicker pile became the standard for these rugs, which lent to a less formal aesthetic that remains popular today.
