Antique Persian Serapi oriental rug, in large size An antique Persian Serapi oriental rug, size 13'5" x 10'4", circa 1900. This handsome hand-knotted wool rug features a central medallion in a soft red field at center, with light blue, and ivory tones throughout the rest of the carpet. The central field is enclosed within a complementary outer border. A beautifully balanced rug with soft colors and Classic design, and an excellent addition to your home decor that will instantly bring warmth, color, charm, and sophistication to your interiors. A wonderful choice for a foyer, an entry way, a living space, a bedroom, or as a decorative accent. Can also be used as a wall hanging!

    Antique Large Persian Serapi Carpet Rug, c. 1900 Serapi rugs and carpets were woven in the Heriz district of Northwest Persia starting in the Mid-19th century in response to a great increase in demand for rugs internationally. Prior to that, there were no rugs woven (in Persia) for export that exhibited this stylized drawing of plant and flower forms. The lower knot density and thicker pile became the standard for these rugs, which lent to a less formal aesthetic that remains popular today. The neutral ground color of the border is unusual and sets of the other colors in an interesting way. The use of natural dyes in the Heriz workshops prevailed well into the 20th century, setting them apart from city workshops, which began to embrace synthetic dyes as early as the turn of the century.
