Antique Persian Tabriz Rug, c. 1900
This elegant Tabriz carpet balances open spaces with areas of finely detailed and precise drawing composed in a soft palette of mellow harmonious tones of creams and ochre. Qualities such as these made antique Tabriz Persian carpets some of the most sought-after pieces on the market. With such prominence, however, has come a host of poor imitations purporting to be of the same quality. In recent years a flood of newer twentieth-century pieces, lacking the character and spirit of examples from the turn of the century and before, have been chemically faded in an attempt to mimic the subtle palette of genuine older nineteenth-century Tabriz carpets. Inevitably, they fail to do so. This piece is the real deal. It is inscribed in the center of the top border.
