Antique Serab Rug Gallery
About the Item
This charming village rug was woven in the vicinity of Hamadan in western Persia at the turn of the century. This format with a field of design peering out from a camel ground is reminiscent of neighbouring Serab pieces from the region. The playfulness and informality of this piece suggest a weaver familiar with the tradition but for whom color and flow was more important than rigid structure. Indeed, the inner orange guard border doesn't even start until about a third of the way up the field. The composition is irregular, asymmetric but remarkably balanced.
