Hand-knotted in fine wool circa 1920-1930, this 11x15 antique Persian Tabriz rug is believed to be a rare “Bellini” rug—a particular lineage of Persian rugs inspired by a particular Italian European sensibility. On the Design: Bellini carpets in this provenance refer to a special tradition of Persian designs inspired by the carpets in the famous Venetian Renaissance paintings of the same name that inspired generations. Connoisseurs may further note this design seems to draw on Polonaise sensibilities in its particular use of pink, gold and navy blue. Its play of finely detailed medallions and floral patterns remark a fabulous play of these sensibilities with the Tabriz style in one of the most sophisticated pieces of its provenance. Keen eyes may further admire its particularly shiny wool—one of many distinct beauties in this refined piece that make it so collectible today.
