Colorful Antique Persian Karaje Rug, Circa 1930s

About the Item

Karaje rugs are woven in the Northwest region of Iran. They’re known for their durable wool quality, and geometric designs. They have a heavy influence on the geometry of Caucasian rugs of Caucasus which is just North of Iran. All Caucasian rugs are typically tribal and geometric. The native weavers of the region weaving Heriz rugs are Turkic. They differ from the Heriz rugs of the same region in the sense that their warps are woven side by side, making it a more subtle weave. The tones in this beautiful Karaje rug consist of a stepped red sub-field anchored by a large, octogramme putty medallion, enclosing central ecru palmette octofoil. Cream field sneaks up the zig-zag sides and expands to the clawed corner triangles. Putty border.
