Early 20th Century Persian Silk Tabriz Carpet ( 10' x 13'8" - 305 x 417 )

About the Item

21764 Tabriz Silk Carpet Azerbaijan Province, Northwestern Persia 10’ x 13’8” – 305 x 417 Circa 1910 All-silk foundation, fine symmetric (Turkish) knots in silk, with narrow end bands with silk pile in relief over a flat-woven silk ground. This is an antique tour-de-force piece with an off-white ground displaying a light blue medallion with cartouche and escutcheon pendants. Centering the medallion is an ivory lozenge-shaped sub-medallion with four complex petal palmette pendants and two emergent cypresses. The field displays serpentine cloud-bands, red forked, arabesque acanthus volutes, swirling palmettes, barbed leaves, fluttering birds and raceme leaves. The palette is wide and truly amazing. The red corners each show two pairs of addorsed peacocks. The salmon main border exhibits tilted petal palmettes, shields and semi-vases. Pairs if semi-vases make the border corners turn artistically. At each end is a red silk plain-weave with cartouche-shaped pile “islands”. This is a very fine example of the luxurious, money-is-no-object Tabriz carpets which owe more to the painterly arts than to traditional carpet weaving. Although the Tabriz carpet designers are unstudied, the artist here must have been assigned to only the finest and most complex pieces from a shop with extremely high standards. The execution and materials are both impeccable. Good condition.
