  • Antique Persian Dabir Kashan
    Located in New York, NY
Kashan is located in the center of Iran in the Isfahan province and is one of Iran's oldest cities. The area was one of the primary seats of pre-historic civilization, with Sialk only 4km from current day Kashan, of which sections date back more than 6000BC. The city of Kashan got it name from the initial inhabitants, the Kasian people of Tapeh Sialk. Built on the outskirts of the salt lake and desert of Iran, the climate is hot and dry. Some claim that the Three Wise Men hailed from Kashan, whether or not this claim has any grounding the fact the claim is made highlights the prestige of the city in ancient times. Beautiful Kashan rugs have been crafted here since the 17th century during the Safavid dynasty, with many scholars believing that some of the smaller silk designs date back to the early 16th century. Kashan was a holiday retreat for many of the rulers of the Safavid era, benefiting from stunning architecture and the city is renowned for its stunning holiday homes. The rugs made in Kashan are often instantly recognizable and are amongst the most beautiful and famous of all Persian rugs. For many, when they think of a Persian rug, the image they see in their head is that of the traditional Kashan rug with central medallion on a red field with navy and ivory borders. Kashan Dabir From the mid-19th-early 20th century the finest quality rugs from Kashan were called Dabir and said to be from the workshop of Dabir. Today it is generally assumed that Dabir is an indication of Fine Kerman workshop production rather than a firm attribution. However with the existence of some signed Dabir rugs it is certain that the workshop existed. The early Kashan...

  • Antique French Tapestry Rug 2'0'' x 3'9''
    Located in New York, NY
Who’s got a dog in this fight? Clearly, two male peasants do, as they try to separate the two battling beasts with a hayfork and a stick while a mother and child cower to the right. The rustic character of the scene is emphasized by a farmhouse to the right. In the foreground are logs, leafy plants and a brook or stream. Trees in full seasonal leaf close off the scene at the left and background the excitement. The palette is warm, with an assortment of browns, greys, greens, straw, sand and sienna. The clothes of the peasant women are touched in pale blue-greys, light yellow and ecru. The fallen dog is in shades of brown, while the collared aggressor has a dark brown and off white coat. This wall hanging is executed in slit tapestry weave with wool pattern wefts. Measurres: 2'0'' x 3'9''. The styles of clothing indicate an early 19th century date for the depicted event, but the piece is clearly later. Tapestry depictions of peasant scenes began in the 18th century in both Flanders and France with the work of the Flemish artist David Teniers II. These were popular in the cities with the rising affluent upper middle class who never came in contact with the real peasanterie, but who wanted to show their imagined roots in an agrarian lifestyle. In the 19th century, these tapestries were particularly popular in France. Unlike earlier tapestry sets...
