Orley Shabahang Wool Contemporary Persian Rug, 3' x 5'
About the Item
Measuring 2’7” x 5’4”, this modern carpet from the Orley Shabahang Architectural collection, titled Strata, is hand-knotted in steel gray, dark brown, and cream wool. Its background of cream wool acts as the perfect setting for Strata’s rocky detailing. Owner, and lead designer, Bahram Shabahang drew inspiration from the movement of waves crashing over the rocky shores of Lake Michigan. Utilizing the circular design of large boulders on the lakebed, Bahram imagined its design by incorporating the movement of the lake’s waves and how they change as water rushes toward the shore. Strata's design begins with six rows of circular motifs, detailed by dark brown and steel gray wool, characterized by alternating linear and bull’s eye motifs. The center of the piece utilizes a ‘W’ stylized motif, detailed in dark brown wool, which signifies the wave caps right before crashing into the lake’s shoreline. The bottom third represents waves that have crashed onto shore and then receded into the lake. Large ovular motifs, detailed by a repetitive dark brown cross and rectangular pattern, sit atop the steel gray background. Flowing effortlessly throughout the design, the depiction of waves through a textile medium is awe-inspiring and continues to captivate audiences today.
