Stunning Antique Persian Sultanabad Large Carpet
About the Item
Sultanabad rugsare a type of hand-knotted Persian rug originating from the city of Sultanabad (now known as Arak) in Iran. They are highly regarded for their quality and artistic beauty. Sultanabad rugs gained popularity during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, particularly in Western markets. They were prized for their durability, intricate designs, and a unique blending of Persian and European artistic influences. These rugs were often produced in large sizes, making them suitable for use in grand rooms and palaces. Design-wise, Sultanabad rugs typically feature a central medallion surrounded by intricate floral and geometric patterns. The color palette is rich and varied, incorporating vibrant reds, blues, greens, and earth tones. The patterns and motifs can vary, including floral designs, arabesques, paisley motifs, and Persian rug motifs such as Herati or Shah Abbasi. Sultanabad rugs are known for their high-quality craftsmanship. They are hand-knotted using the Persian knot technique, where individual knots are tied onto a foundation of warp threads. The wool used in Sultanabad rugs is of excellent quality, contributing to their durability and lustrous appearance.
Today, the term "Sultanabad" is also used to describe rugs produced in other regions, such as India or Pakistan, that draw inspiration from the original Sultanabad designs. These rugs continue to be highly sought after by collectors and interior designers for their timeless beauty and artistic value. This large red-ground western Persian village carpet, possibly from the Ziegler firm, shows a "dumb bell" open cartouche allover pattern defined by leaves, and further displaying rosettes and flower heads, in an allover design. Strip style main border of reversing turtles. Moderate weave on cotton.
