Extra fine weave Persian Nain area rug from the 4th quarter of the 1900s in navy blue, French blue, pale yellow, and ivory colors. The rug has the signature of the “Habibian” which is considered one of the best rug workshops in the city of Nain. Extremely fine Nain rugs are world renowned for their extremely high knot count and wonderful design. The design of this rug is reminiscent of rugs from the city of Isfahan with circular branches that go around the field. This Nain has a beautiful floral design set in a rich navy blue field color with a cream color border. The design colors in the field include navy blue, French blue, burgundy, brown, and caramel. The corner spandrels are in French blue with cream color designs. The rug has a wool pile with a cotton foundation and silk highlights that shimmer under light. The vibrancy of the silk is unbelievable especially in the beautiful central medallion which gives a three-dimensionality to the design. Situated on the edge of the desert, Kashan experiences seasonally intense heat, winds and bright sunlight. It has served as an important political and artistic center throughout the major periods of Persian history and is regarded as a major weaving center for antique Persian rugs. Kashan is known for not only silk and textiles, but for decorative ceramic tiles. Although Kashan rugs are known to have been woven since at least the Sassanian Empire, 224 to 642 CE, there are two major periods of carpet production. The first was during the Safavid period in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries in royal workshops and commercial weaving centers. The second was during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries under Qajar rule, primarily for export but also for use by the Persian upper class.
