75899, vintage Persian Mahal area rug with traditional style. This hand knotted wool vintage Persian Mahal rug features a diamond-shaped center medallion floating on an abrashed scarlet red field. An all-over small-scale mir boteh pattern decorates the field. The widely used boteh motif is variously thought to represent a leaf, bush, pinecone, sprout or flame. It is also believed to symbolize warmth and life. The medallion, spandrels, and main border all utilize an attractive and highly stylized Shekeri pattern. The numerous borders echo the small-scale pattern of the field and give the relatively simple composition a great deal of depth and interest. The Shekeri main border is accompanied by calyx meander, cross and diamond, Laleh Abbassi, rosette meander, and barber’s pole secondary borders. The dazzling combination of patterns in this vintage Persian Mahal rug would be sure to enliven any space with just the right balance of tradition and bold graphic design.
