Taking center stage is a a cusped medallion anchored with palmette pendants at either end with complementary corner spandrels. An all-over geometric pattern composed of Herati motifs covers the field adding visual interest. The Classic Herati pattern, also known as the Mahi or Fish pattern, is amongst the most widespread and well known of all Persian designs, consisting of a flower centered in a diamond accompanied by curving lanceolate leaves that resemble fish. The Herati motif is widely used in Iran and believed to represent the small fishes come up just beneath the surface of the water to swim in the full moon’s reflection. The Mahi Persian rug is framed with a classic Herati border flanked with a series of inner and outer guard bands.
