Wool, Hand-knotted Transitional Persian Bakhshaysh Rug, Multicolored, 4' x 6'

About the Item

Featuring warm shades of orange, red, indigo, and taupe wool, this transitional Persian Bakhshayesh carpet is hand-knotted in Orley Shabahang's exclusive Shekarloo weave. Measuring 4'2" x 6', the carpet's overall composition depicts a classic Persian garden theme. The field portrays butterflies gently floating from one flower to another amid a deep indigo background. Contrasting warm tones highlight the decorative motifs, resulting in a piece that is balanced both in tone and proportion. An exterior border encompasses the scene with leaflike motifs enveloping the garden. Given this rug’s size and its classic, transitional design, this piece is quite versatile and fits almost any room and decor. This transitional Bakhshayesh carpet utilizes a hand-knotted weave inspired by antique Persian pieces. The weave, Shekarloo, requires the finest raw materials and the technique of the most skilled artisan weavers. The wool possesses high levels of lanolin, which provides the softness and the natural stain resistance needed to ensure its durability. Hand-spinning the fibers re-introduces lanolin back into the wool and creates the striations within the pile. After spinning, dye masters take the bundles and dye the wool in small vats of organic vegetable dyes. Once dyed, the yarn is washed and dried in the sunlight to set the patina within the wool. Only after drying can weavers begin knotting each thread of pile onto the cotton warp and weft foundation. Implementing these traditional methods ensures the longevity of the carpet, created today to be an antique of the future.
