Hand knotted in wool, a rare antique dragon Soumak rug originating from Russia circa 1920-1930, relishing a union of a sought-after blue, beige-brown, and red colorway with a well defined geometric pattern filling the scale with a traditional appeal. The densely packed pattern prevails in various muted accents, especially present in the border as it complements this very interesting take on a renowned tribal style. Connoisseurs may note—in addition to hooked spandrels referencing the dragon motifs of this family’s name—an interesting array of complementary motifs, such as the Chinese endless knot motif, Anatolian four-pronged ram’s horn motifs, meandering trefoils in the innermost border, and monster’s feet borders to name only a few of the impressive, nomadic range of symbols woven here. Further to its rarity is the vertical symmetry, whereas many other dragon Soumak rugs have omnidirectional symmetry—possible lending to greater design applications and certainly to the collectibility of this piece. Enjoying fringes on the vertical borders with only some variation.
