1890s Antique European Rug with Colorful Geometric Patterns, from Rug & Kilim

About the Item

Hand-knotted in wool circa 1890-1900, this 6x9 antique European rug is a rare turn-of-the-century piece, believed to be of Irish or possibly English provenance. On the Design: Admirers of the craft may note an inspiration from primitivist geometric patterns and pictorial motifs of Persian tribal rugs. This is an especially rare departure like few of its period, being a European piece drawing on Eastern sensibilities when the inverse was more abundant. Keen eyes will further admire the number of hues in the polychromatic colorway, and especially in those bold figures and motifs meant to represent humans, animals, and others inspired by folk art. It’s a work of warm presence and distinction alike, as collectible as it is personal among 19th century rugs. Condition: This antique rug further enjoys good condition for its age and origin—ready for the floor.
