Antique Botanic Orange Needlework Carpet

About the Item

Fine Antique Botanic orange needlework carpet Size: 11'0" × 14'10" (335 × 452 cm) A late 19th century needlework carpet, having a sand ground with whimsical flowering vinery around a gold leafy vine framing a central medallion containing a floral bouquet within a narrow gold border with leaves. English needlepoints antique rugs, renowned for their profuse ?oral motifs, reached an artistic zenith in 1700-1750 but were produced through the end of the nineteenth century. Mainly used as table antique carpets, the earliest pieces, dating from 1550-1650, exhibited scrolls of ?owers with pictorial and heraldic motifs. Eighteenth-century pieces reveal the in?uence of contemporary artistic movements including baroque, chinoiserie, neoclassical, and rococo.
