An antique French Aubusson carpet from the late 19th century.
The style of Aubusson tapestries and carpets produced have changed over the centuries because of its war-ridden history. There is no official date on how far back Aubusson’s are predated. However, historians believe these rugs, once reserved for Kings, date back to the 15th-16th century.
The unusual half drop pattern featuring luxuriant bouquets of flowers, against architectural elements amalgamates femininity with masculinity. Geometric and Holbein octagon motifs are wrapped around rosette wreaths recapturing the ageless beauty of these majestic rugs. The sparse floral design rests on an earthy field composed of tobacco and terracotta hues unlike traditional oriental inspired Aubussons with millefleur designs(translates to "thousand flowers") and navy blue backgrounds.
Age-old Classic European Aubusson’s are a work of art. The historical value far exceeds any damage that comes with centuries of wear. The distressed feel makes for a more decorative look which brings antiquity and authenticity into these rugs that still remain a symbol of prestige and sophistication.
