About the Item

A lovely antique Savonnerie carpet, France, late 19th century. Excellent pile. This superb Napoleon III Savonnerie carpet features floral guard bands reminiscent of decorative woodwork that create a frame for the formal borders and central medallion. Reflecting of the luxurious detail that embellish palatial ceilings, featuring a rich variety of botanical motifs, including floral garlands set over a chain of lilies and sprawling acanthus leaf scrolls shaded with rose and mauve, surrounding a yellow floral sunburst motif. This carpet epitomises the architectural style, formal composition, delicate colours and careful shading that makes these two-dimensional works of art come to life.
