Early 20th Century French Aubusson Re-sized Rug

About the Item

Early 20th Century French Aubusson Brown Size Adjusted Rug Size: 11'1" × 14'8" (337 × 447 cm). This French antique rug is an example of Aubusson weaving craft, reaching back to the 18th century. The rug, created circa 1920, carries a pattern of graceful flower bouquets against a warm brown background – in contrast to traditional Aubusson designs, this one does not have multiple borders, spandrels, cartouche or a central medallion. Thus, its style is rather Bessarabian than French. The size of the Aubusson rug is adjusted, the borders are finished with dark brown trimming. The antique rug was made by hand of high-quality wool in accordance with the traditional Aubusson weaving technique. Due to careful execution, it survived until this day in excellent condition and will serve its owners for generations without any signs of wear, provided minimal maintenance.

The Art Deco style owes its name to the first major exhibition of decorative arts to be held after the First World War: L’Exposition Internationale des Arts Decoratifs et Industriels Modernes held in Paris in 1925. The supreme elegance of the custom made interiors at the event set an example for interior designers the world over.
