French Midcentury Design Rug by Jacques Borker

About the Item

Jacques Borker (born in Paris in 1922) is one of the most influential tapestry designers of the 20th century. Known for his mastery of abstract, Art Deco and contemporary designs, his work is mostly associated with the Bauhaus and the Art Deco avant garde movements. Borker studied architecture at the Ecole des Beaux Arts, where he was a contemporary and friend of Le Corbusier, Charlotte Perriand, Jean Lurçat, Zao Wou-Ki, Pierre Soulages and Hans Hartung. He also studied ceramic art, tapestry and Industrial Design. The example illustrated here is quite characteristic of his Modernist style, which references the Art Deco Cubist design repertoire with a pattern of abstract V-shaped forms occupying opposing angles, as well as a point in the third dimension, yet converging towards each other. An iconic example of French Mid-Century Modern design.
