Louis XIV Style Antique French Aubusson Verdure Tapestry, Venus and Adonis

About the Item

Louis XIV Style Antique French Aubusson Verdure Tapestry, Venus and Adonis Wall Hanging 13'09 x 09'05. Drawing inspiration by Italian Baroque painter, Francesco Albani, Peter Paul Rubens, and artist Jan van Orley, this antique French Aubusson verdure tapestry depicts a mythological scene from Venus (Aphrodite) and Adonis. Venus falls in love with the hunter, Adonis, after being struck by one of cupid's arrows. Surrounded by dense foliage, greenery, fauna, and flowers, this verdure tapestry portrays an idyllic setting of a deer drinking from a pond and a crane standing nearby with birds perched on branches adding fundamental interest to the tranquil landscape scene. Adonis and Venus are surrounded by the lush pastoral Afqa forest nestled behind The Temple of Aphrodite. Adonis is wearing a blue drape across his body while his hunting dog and bow and arrow lie at his feet. Venus with the cupid at her side intensely pulls Adonis, as she tells him of her premonition. She pleads with Adonis not to go on the hunt because he will not survive. The antique French Aubusson verdure tapestry is enclosed with an acanthus scroll and foliate border. Predominantly rendered in variegated shades of cerulean, verdigris, brown, and beige, this antique French Aubusson tapestry embodies true verdure water and landscapes coloring in blues, greens, and browns. With its commitment to tradition and heart full of whimsy, this antique Aubusson wall hanging can enliven nearly any opulent period-interior with color and vitality. Well-suited for French, Rococo, Louis XIV, Louis XI, Louis XV, Rococo, Chippendale, Regal, Aubusson, Baroque, Renaissance, Old World, Traditional, European, and Savonnerie inspired interiors with Gobelins or Beauvais style. Whether in a formal setting with elaborate furnishings or in an Ottoman style interior, this antique French verdure tapestry will bring vibrant life where it is displayed. Antique French Aubusson Tapestry

The Aubusson tapestry manufacture of the 17th and 18th centuries managed to compete with the royal manufacture of Gobelins tapestry and the privileged position of Beauvais tapestry. Tapestry manufacture at Aubusson, in the upper valley of the Creuse in central France, may have developed from looms in isolated family workshops established by Flemings that are noted in documents from the 16th century. Typically, Aubusson tapestries depended on engravings as a design source or the full-scale cartoons from which the low-warp tapestry-weavers worked. As with Flemish and Parisian tapestries...
