Antique Spanish Cuenca Carpet
About the Item
From Cuenca, this single warp knot carpet has a tawny ground with a twisted strapwork pattern defining octogramme and quatrefoil reserves enclosing rosettes and flowing stars. The connected oval cartouche border is on the same tawny ground tone and has an internal volute and flower pattern in each panel.
Accent tones include goldenrod and ivory in the narrow and fairly light, but effective, palette. The overall style is 19th century and has no reference to more classical Spanish carpets.

- Antique Spanish CarpetLocated in Henley-on-Thames, OxfordshireThis exquisite early-twentieth-century carpet was produced in Alcaraz, Spain. This carpet is an excellent example of the formal mandate to develop a distinctively Spanish style of artwork. It is an allover design that is in cream and green. The pink border sets the carpet off. Alcaraz is a region in Southern Castile and is thought to be one of the first centres to produce these new designs. The colours of the antique Spanish rugs became muted due to experimentation with new dyestuffs. Also, the skill of the Moorish master carpet dyers was lost. Many of these antique Alcaraz carpets...Category
