19thc English Armchair w/Acanthus Leaf Carving & Needle & Petit Point Upholstery
About the Item
This elegant Jacobean Revival English oak armchair features hand carved acanthus leaves on the upper and lower sloping arms. The front legs and stretchers are also expertly hand carved.
It is upholstered in colorful petit point and needle point with mythical birds surrounded by flowers and fanciful designs with gimp trim throughout. Gimp, a somewhat surprising phrase for an ornamental section or strip that is used to hide joints and seams. Unlike the unpleasant associations that the word has, gimp is something quite beautiful.
In the 1870's, furniture makers turned to the Jacobean period for inspiration. This trend combined with the trend toward increased amounts of factory-made furniture led to a loss of elegance.
