A pair of antique English Edwardian period pale walnut armchairs, circa 1910 with distinctive carving. Please notice the elegant shape these chairs possess. The top of the seat back is Queen Anne in origin and focuses on the stylized scallop shell in the centre and is framed on both sides with the arch of the outline of the chair. The comfortable arms have an extremely curvaceous profile known as a "shepherd’s crook". This term refers to the end of the arm that folds under itself and resembles the crook of a diligent shepherd used to rescue errant sheep from his flock by hooking them around the neck and pulling them to safety when they had fallen into a crevice or hole. The sensuous movement of the arm as it moves forward and backward as well as side to side provides a distinctive shape to the armchair. The seat has a slight bow to the front and is supported by a pair of front legs in the famous Chippendale claw and ball formation. The knee of each leg is adorned with a decorative carving of a seven lobe shell above a triple flourish while the well carved claw that grasps the ball is noticeably well defined. The walnut has a gorgeous honey color and the fresh upholstery is a handsome imported Belgian linen chosen for its modern appeal. The use of a monochrome fabric emphasizes the attractive curves of the frame and contrasts in a fresh and attractive manner turning what could be old fashioned chairs into a new and desirable object for a contemporary interior.
