Antique English Yorkshire Wainscot Oak Highback Corner Arm Chair Throne 47"

About the Item

Exceedingly Rare English Yorkshire Wainscot High back corner armchair, circa 17th century. Made of oak with an impressive hand carved back that features a whimsical figure along the crest over a foliate and berries motif, C and S scrolls, turned supports, and hand tooling throughout. The chairs apron showcases a scalloped shell at the corner between an arcade of palladiums over a flower and lower leafy spandrels. The chair is supported by four legs with a pronounced central cabriole leg and acanthus carved knee leading to pad foot. Includes a leather removable seat cushion. Wainscot chairs were a popular style of seating in the early 17th century. They were commonly found in England and colonial America, and were an upscale alternative to the more common turned chairs. These chairs are most often characterized by flat wooden seats with molded edges, a beautifully carved seat rail and legs joined by low straight stretchers. The term "wainscot" may come from the German word for "wall-board". The wood for wainscot paneling originally came from a specific oak tree known as "wainscoting oak".
