Carl Cederholm Armchair for Firma Stil & Form Stockholm, Sweden 1940s

About the Item

In the realm of mid-20th century Swedish furniture design, the name Carl Cederholm stands out as a luminary, who favoured the classic elegance of Swedish furniture design and combined it with modern elements. This characteristic armchair from the 1940s remains a timeless testament to his, and to Swedish Modern design’s enduring legacy. Crafted during an era marked by a burgeoning design sensibility, Cederholm's armchair encapsulates the quintessential characteristics of Swedish design during the 1940s. As such, this model seamlessly blends form and function; the welcoming shape has a raised profile for sitting comfort. The shape is beautifully outlined by the metal pearl studding, highlighting the rounded edges and lush red velvet upholstery. As an early mid-century model, the design is a successful mixture of classic styles, such as Swedish Grace and Classicism with the visible marks of modernity seen in the shape especially. The standout element are the stained beech legs, in a distinctive arrow shape. They brilliantly “crash” with the velvet and the with the understated elegance of the design, creating visual interest that draw the eye. They also attest to the clear commitment to quality craftsmanship. The 1940s marked a period when Swedish furniture design underwent a transformation. Influenced by the prevailing Scandinavian design movements, designers like Cederholm embraced simplicity, functionality, while keeping a deep respect for natural materials and traditional craftsmanship. Cederholm graduated from the Tekniska Skolan, Stockholm, in 1940, after which he started the Stil & Form furniture company, the manufacturer of this armchair. An important commission for Cederholm was furnishing the Grand Central hotel in Gävle. This armchair exemplifies Swedish design principles; with its clean lines, ergonomic design, and expertly curated materials, it marries comfort with aesthetic sophistication. Its wooden frame, meticulously crafted, is a testament to Cederholm's dedication to detail. The upholstery adds warmth and timelessness. Condition: In good vintage condition.
