About the Item

The Reversible is one of the most iconic armchairs in Brazilian Modern Design, and it is today a wonderful example of the awesome creations by the prolific duo Eisler & Hauner and their company Forma. Martin Eisler designed this sculptural chair in 1955. This armchair is comfortable, innovative, simple & clean design, ludic and sculptural. It is incredibly contemporary: the architectural shape, the geometric aspect of it. and, designers have attempted to achieve the level of playfulness and interactivity seen this design for the last 40 years. It is incredibly user focused. The frame is, as usual with Hauner & Eisler, visually light whilst at the same time sturdy, stable, elegant. It a language very recognisable as theirs. With the delicate detail of the brass feet that gently touch the floor. One can adjust the seat to have a varied seating experience. It is fun. In Hauner and Eisler work we often see the marriage of European rigour, tradition, innovation + Brazilian playfulness, softness & sensuality: in this piece we see them at their best. Our chair comes from the original owner, in São Paulo. The creative duo were the leading designers behind the Brazilian furniture company Forma, and produced many celebrated pieces of Brazilian midcentury design. Martin Eisler (1913-1977) was born in Vienna, and studied architecture in his country. Eisler left Europe in 1938 due to the rise of fascist regimes. He first lived in Buenos Aires, where he settled and sett up an interior design firm, Interieur Forma. He married and started a family. Carlo Hauner (1927-1996) studied technical drawing at the Brera Academy in Milan, Italy. In 1948 he moved to Brazil, and dedicated himself to the design of textile, ceramics, furniture, and architecture. He founded a furniture production company called Móveis Artesanal. Hauner & Eisler met in Brazil in 1953. From then on Eisler started travelling frequently to Brazil to collaborate on designs. They then founded Forma to sell their own designs as well as pieces licensed from Knoll International. Along with Oca, Forma became one of the biggest names in Brazilian furniture production in that period. Hauner and Eisler's designs are characterized by Brazilian woods, thin tubular frames, and range from furniture to ceramics and textiles. Some of their most famous designs are the "rib" lounge chair, the "concha" chair and the "reversible" lounge chair you see here. Hauner eventually returned to Italy and sold his part of the company to Eisler. Forma prospered during the 60s and 70s, until Martin Eisler died in 1977. Eisler and Hauner’s work was at the forefront of modern furniture design in Brazil. The legacy of their production is of particular significance and impact on Brazilian midcentury design.
