European Armchairs Upholstered in Bouclé Fabric, Europe Late 20th Century
About the Item
What connected European seating models of the mid- and later 20th century was that comfort and functionality were often the main priority. As this pair of armchairs exemplifies, strong ornamentation was considered unnecessary, while quality craftsmanship was considered the opposite of that.
These armchairs stand out for their elongated look that is particularly apparent from the sides. They are inherently elegant and cosy to look at and sit in, making them true to their mid-century modern heritage. The frames have a distinct, gently curved look with connected backs and arms that form a shell. This particular design element recalls Scandinavian modern seating design, especially the rounded shape of the sloping arms. The backs are lightly reclined for comfort and have stylish cross stitches arranged in two lines. The bouclé fabric of the upholstery provides a stylish, textured look that is playfully interrupted visually by the vivid cross stitches. The wooden front legs are conical, while the back legs are tapered and slightly bent to assure structural support to the body. The differing legs add visual interest to the design, breaking the otherwise perfectly symmetrical lines of the body.
The strong tradition of carefully considered design and master craftsmanship were carried well into the second half of the 20th century. Paired with quality materials, these armchairs are already heirloom pieces that have already proven to stand the changing times both visually and quality wise.

In good vintage condition. Wear consistent with age and use. The chairs have been reupholstered recently in a premium bouclé fabric. Each of our items can be reupholstered by our in-house atelier in a fabric of choice. Please reach out for more information.
