Fireside Chair, Adolf Loos for Thonet, Austria, 1930s
About the Item
A fireside chair with woven leather designed by Adolf Loos and Heinrich Kulka and manufactured by Thonet in Austria during the early 1930s.
As one of the leading advocates of Modernism, the architect and designer Adolf Loos (1870-1933) designed this chair alongside his apprentice Heinrich Kulka as a commission for Helena and Hugo Semmler's apartment in Pilsen, Czechia in 1931, and later showcased in a Werkbund housing estate in Vienna in 1932.
Combining exceptional craftspersonship in design that Loos pioneered during the Arts and Crafts movement, the chair is made of an oak frame and has recently been upholstered with a terracotta-coloured woven seat.
The Fireside Chair is not only a collectible piece of design history but an item that can be used to get down low, comfortable and warm, especially next to a fire.
