Fratelli Levaggi pair of cherrywood Campanino chairs, Chiavari, Italy, 1960s

About the Item

An exquisite and rare pair of armchairs, known as the "Campanino" model, was meticulously crafted by Fratelli Levaggi in Chiavari, Italy, during the 1960s. Fabricated from high-quality cherrywood, these armchairs exhibit a timeless design, featuring seats intricately hand-caned using the ancient Chiavari technique. With precise dimensions of 48cm in width, 53cm in depth, and a height of 88cm, these chairs strike a balance between elegance and functionality. The seat height of 43cm is designed to optimize comfort for the user. Following a meticulous restoration process involving French-polished frames and newly hand-knotted woven cane seats, this pair of armchairs is presented in excellent vintage condition. The historical significance of the Campanino chair within Chiavari's furniture production is noteworthy. Originating in 1807 at the behest of Marquis Stefano Rivarola, as envisioned by Giuseppe Gaetano Descalzi, this model quickly gained popularity for its contemporary and lightweight structure. Its continuous production since inception underscores its enduring popularity. It is worth mentioning that the timeless design of the Campanino chair had a discernible influence on the renowned designer Gio Ponti. Ponti drew inspiration from this model for two of his acclaimed masterpieces: the Leggera chair in the early 1950s and the Superleggera chair in 1958.
