Geraldo de Barros Lounge Chair in Iron and Yellow Upholstery

About the Item

Geraldo de Barros for Unilabor, armchair, fabric, iron, wood, Brazil, 1955 Crafted by the Brazilian modernist designer Geraldo de Barros, this lounge chair showcases the typical materials employed by the Unilabor workshop: an iron frame paired with wooden armrests. The geometric framework serves as the foundation for this chair, providing robust support for the substantial seat upholstered in yellow upholstery. This design stands as a splendid representation of de Barros' work, exemplifying constructive references associated with Concrete Art. Geraldo de Barros (1923-1998) was a versatile creative force, spanning the realms of painting, photography, and graphic and product design. His experimentation with new forms and aesthetics unfolded in the 1940s. In 1952, he established the Ruptura Group, where an emphasis on excessive formalism became the cornerstone of their ideals. Barros, driven by the belief that refining the taste of the masses was his mission, co-founded the Unilabor Community in 1954 with a Dominican Priest. Here, he used his constructive references rooted in Concrete Art to design and conceptualize furniture. From 1954 to 1961, Unilabor emerged as a prominent studio in São Paulo's furniture design landscape, renowned for its social character. Within his venture, Hobjeto, Barros seamlessly integrated his dual ideals by standardizing production processes for home and office furniture. His innovative approach introduced techniques such as the injection of rigid structured polyurethane and the use of cut and lacquered chipboard in furniture manufacturing.       Please note that this piece is in good, used condition with some fading of the lacquer. Restoration is possible before shipping by our experienced craftspeople in our own in-house restoration atelier. With high attention for the original, they make sure every piece retains its value and is ready for the many years to come. We kindly ask you to contact our design experts for further information about the endless possibilities our restoration and upholstery atelier has to offer. Of course, a locally organized restoration is possible as well.
