Imposing Modernist Pair of Leather and Walnut Club Chairs, Italy 1970s
About the Item
Italy, 1970s
A massive, voluptuously comfortable pair of geometric club chairs in walnut and black leather. A three-paneled rectangular armature in walnut veneer, with rounded edges and fluid cut-outs along the sides and back, wraps around a deep, padded seat in buttery soft leather. The seats' strong, boxy lines, as if excavated from a colossal leather block which nonetheless levitates a foot above the ground, contrast with the undulating carve-outs and curved angles of the interlocking bentwood frames, infusing a playful lightness and balance into an otherwise imposing design.

- Pair of Industrial Egg Chairs in Aluminum and Leather, France 1970'sLocated in New York, NYFrance, 1970's A sleek pair of modernist armchairs in welded aluminum with cloutage details, cradling a cognac leather interior. A single fluid curve unites the domed back and fin-like arms which segue into winnowing legs before seamlessly transitioning into a convex base. In the spirit of Jean Prouvé’s modular aluminum prototypes for the Maison Tropicale in Brazzaville, these beautifully round armchairs display the innovative rationality that made the project an icon of industrial modernism — but without the colonialist baggage that ultimately destined Prouvé’s African...Category

- Pair of Brazilian Modernist Rosewood & Leather Easy Chairs, circa 1970sBy Sergio Rodrigues, Percival LaferLocated in Norwalk, CTGenerous proportions and luxurious finishes set this fabulous pair of Brazilian Modernist lounge chairs apart from the rest. The frames are crafted from gorgeous solid rosewood, with interesting sculptural chamfering at the legs. The tufted cushions are finished in beautiful caramel-colored leather and fastened by fringed straps which give just the right amount of Bohemian flair. Though these chairs are unsigned, they bear many similarities to contemporaneous designs by Percival Lafer, Sergio Rodrigues, and Jean Gillon. As one of the world's leading producers of rosewood, the nation of Brazil has long held close ties to the furniture industry. Yet, it was not until the second half of the 20th Century when the South American country - long known solely as an exporter of raw materials - became a design powerhouse in its own right. During this time, designers such as Percival Lafer and Sergio Rodrigues drew upon a unique shared cultural aesthetic and a rebellious spirit to create some of the coolest and most sought-after furniture of the Modern era.
