About the Item

We kindly suggest that you read the entire description, as with it we try to give you detailed technical and historical information to guarantee the authenticity of our objects. Interesting French chair in the Louis XVI style; the wooden frame, painted with gold paint and then antiqued, is embellished with elegant neoclassical motifs; the legs are straight and fluted; the sturdy seat is made of Vienna straw, and is much wider than normal, the soft purple cushion just rests on it; the backrest is commensurate with the seat, so it is very wide, divided into three sections and finished with fine Vienna straw work. The chair was made between 1950 and 1955 in a craftsman's workshop near Paris certainly by a very skilled cabinetmaker, a revival inspired by the Louis XVII style; in fact, 1950s pieces often incorporated design elements from earlier periods. The process of constructing the back and seat, made of "Vienna straw," uses equally spaced holes and woven plant material (drawn guinea cane) and has been known since Egyptian times, but it was from the mid-1800s that it became popular worldwide. The Louis XVI style emerged in the late 18th century and is characterized by a neoclassical design, with straight lines, classical ornamentation, and an overall understated appearance. It is inspired by ancient Greek and Roman architecture. Louis XVI's furniture often includes elements such as fluted legs, rosettes, and geometric patterns. Although our chair is not an original 18th-century piece, it has been skillfully and expertly constructed and has taken on a personal and unrepeatable charm, becoming a discreet and original piece of furniture, capable of creating a calm and tranquil atmosphere, lending romance and sophistication to any type of decor. The chair is in good condition. Measures width cm.73, depth cm.53, height cm.45. For all our shipments we use special packaging materials (custom-made wooden crates, styrofoam, etc.) for maximum protection and safety of the items.

The bench was made between 1880 and 1885 in an artisan workshop near Paris certainly by a very skilled master cabinetmaker because this kind of workmanship requires a lot of experience and skill. The process of seat construction using equidistant holes and a woven plant material (drawn guinea cane) was known since Egyptian times (a stool was found in the tomb of the architect Kha dating from 1600° B.C.), but it was from the mid-19th century that it became popular worldwide. It was the Austro-Hungarian cabinetmaker Michael Thonet (father of bentwood) who in 1842 created chair No. 4 with this technique for the Daum café on Vienna's Kohlmarkt, but success came in 1859 when the Gebruder Thonet company of Michael's sons presented chair No. 14 made of curved solid wood with a straw seat...
