Later 20th Century Chinese Blonde Wood Official's Hat or Yoke Back Chairs, Pair

About the Item

A stunning pair of 20th century Chinese yoke back armchairs crafted of cypress, baimu. The chairs of typical style and construction, and known as official's hat chairs or yoke back chairs, because of the shape of the crest rail. The chairs solidly constructed in the antique style of cypress wood, known as baimu in Chinese. The wood a wonderful blonde color with an attractive grain and nice luster. The chairs mostly unadorned, save for a small low relief carving of a coiled dragon to the center of the shaped back splats.

    An impressive pagoda form carved hardwood display cabinet with bone and boxwood inlay, crafted for the Peranakan (Straits-Chinese) community in Southeast Asia, mostly likely Malaysia, Indonesia, or Singapore, early 20th century.
