Pair of Armchairs by Tito Varisco, Milan, 1938

About the Item

These striking armchairs were designed and custom-made by Tito Bassanesi Varisco for the private residence of the Zuffellato family in Milan. The solid walnut frames give the chairs a modern and highly original feel. The particularly graphical lines of the tapered legs and their sharp-angled construction contrast beautifully with the simple geometry of the seats. The chairs have been newly upholstered in a white Kvadrat Vidar 2 Fabric, designed by Fanny Arronsen and Raf Simons. Woven from bouclé́ yarns with a regular loop size, Vidar has a deep and close-knit texture giving the fabric a multifaceted and inviting richness. Biography: The multifaceted architect, artist and scenographer Tito Bassanesi Varisco (1915-1998) gained his architecture degree from the Politecnico in Milan, where he would later become a professor in descriptive geometry and set design. In 1938 he started the architectural studio CKV with Joseph Calderara and Giorgio Keffer. One of their first commissions was the Nicky Chini project, which included offices and a private Palazzo for the Chini cosmetics brand. In the 1950s he joined the Concrete Art movement. From the 1960s onwards Varisco became more interested in set design, teaching at the Milan Academy of Fine Arts and overseeing the set design of the Teatro alla Scala in Milan. His architectural work has ranged from urban projects such as the Autorimessa garage to residential projects and reconstruction projects such as the Teatro Vittorio Emanuele II. Unlike some of his better known contemporaries such as Ico Parisi and Gio Ponti, Varisco has never designed furniture for series production, instead focusing on custom designs to be included in his architectural projects.
