Pair of Carved and Gilded Armchairs Attributed to Maison Jansen
About the Item
A pair of carved and gilded armchairs conceived in the Empire taste, the mahogany frames with carved and gilded swan heads to the arms and the signature Jansen rosette to the tops of the square tapering legs. The frames stamped multiple times with an unidentified brand; the firm deflected credit for a commission to the client, demurely refraining from self-promotion.
Jean-Henri Jansen, originally from Denmark, founded the interior design house Maison Jansen in Paris in 1880. Jansen began creating traditional interiors that also incorporated the prevailing trends of the age such as the Japanese style, the Arts and Crafts movement and the Turkish style.
