Pair of D42 Bauhaus Chairs by Mies van der Rohe
About the Item
Unlike most chairs from this range, originally designed in 1927 for Bauhaus, these are clad in leather and not rattan - we think it makes them more versatile so would look equally at home in a either a domestic or office environment.
Mies van der Rohe born Maria Ludwig Michael Mies (1886 – 1969) was a German-born American architect.
Along with Le Corbusier and Walter Gropius, Van der Rohe is widely regarded as one of the pioneers of modern architecture. In common with many post World War I contemporaries, he sought to establish a new architectural style that could represent modern times just as Classical and Gothic did for their own eras. He created an influential Twentieth-Century architectural style, stated with extreme clarity and simplicity. His buildings made use of modern materials such as plate glass and industrial steel. He called his buildings "skin and bones" architecture, seeking a rational approach that would guide the creative process of architectural design. This simplicity can be seen in his furniture designs which have justifiably been called “classics” and are as important today as they were when he designed them.
None of this is surprising from the man who coined the phrase "less is more".
