A sensational and high quality pair of circa 1820 Italian Louis XVI st. giltwood armchairs. Raised by circular tapered fluted legs with topie shaped ends and carved acanthus leaves at the top. The fluted frieze has a bombée shaped front with a central cabochon which is also repeated on both sides and above each leg. The wide seat has 'S' scrolled fluted arms decorated by acanthus leaves. The large oval upholstered back is joined by 'C' scrolled acanthus leaf at the bottom and at the arms. The backs have a handsome twisted ribbon outer band.
