Pair of Karl Johan Style Swedish Empire Klismo Chairs in Cuban Mahogany

About

A very handsome and refined pair of Karl Johan-style Empire Klismos armchairs with saber legs from the Art Deco period in Sweden, circa 1920s. These chairs are exquisitely made using Cuban mahogany, Fine joinery techniques, and offer a wider seat than their original Empire counterpart. Cabinet makers at this time continued the practice of selecting the most beautiful West Indies mahogany, using a crotch cut for the top rail which has been line-inlaid with brass, and the frames are made of a very tight-grained, solid mahogany. There is a label on the under frame of the chair "Myrstedt & Sterns A. B. Stockholm", which was an important emporium in Stockholm. Presumably the chairs were made for them to sell. Myrstedt & Stern is a building on Kungsgatan five at the intersection of Norrlandsgatan in central Stockholm, and was built between 1908 and 1910 for Myrstedt & Stern Ltd. Chairs have been upholstered in a cotton twill They make an elegant host and Hostess chair, living room or desk chairs. Measures: 22 1/2" wide x 24" deep x 35 1/4" high. Seat height 18 1/2".
